Research on Grids of Behaviour: London - Lisbon

The Study of Behaviour Grids is a research focused art piece that explores patterns of behaviour in different public spaces. For this chapter of the study, the London based artist has extended the social experiment into the streets of Lisbon.

Each of the six locations on the video was selected with specific criteria regarding the social interactions of commuters that create the spatial grid of behaviour. Using improvised contemporary dance as a empowering medium of space awareness to disrupt the grid, Escardo is interested on both, the subtle and non-subtle reactions of the public space.

Furthermore, the artist poses the question of three different perspectives towards the study; each perspective’s point of view denotes a different audience. The first perspective comes from the performer himself, who is experiencing the disruption of the grid first hand. The second perspective is the one from the commuters and parties that are not aware of the artistic background behind the disruption. The third comes from the audience within the art context that knowing the parameters of the experiment can experience it with critical eyes.

Finally, for this phase of the research, both the footage from Lisbon and London are displayed next to each other, allowing the present audience to compare and draw conclusions.
